Two of the Australian industry’s biggest players shook hands on a $750,000 deal that saw Lot 785, a beautiful bay colt by Victoria’s leading sire Written Tycoon, leave Yulong Stud for Coolmore.
It was the second highest price commanded at this year’s Magic Millions Sale by a Written Tycoon yearling, topped only by the $800,000 Highclere Australia paid Milburn Creek for their gorgeous filly out of Piping Hot.
Given that he was only the second foal produced by multiple Group 1 winner In Her Time – who was purchased by Yulong for $2.2 million when she was in foal to I Am Invincible at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale – there was a keen sense of anticipation as Lot 785 entered the ring.
And the bidding certainly reflected that, with Tom Magnier’s deep pockets eventually winning out as Coolmore secured the flashy colt for three-quarters of a million.
Speaking after the hammer had dropped, Magnier praised Yulong’s preparation of the colt, saying: “He’s a lovely colt, very strong, he looks very fast and all the team at Yulong have had the horse looking very well all week.
“I know they held the colt in very high regard, we liked him a lot and everybody liked him a lot, because he’s a very forward type of horse.
“I have to say that the Yulong horses have stood out for me this week, and he was a horse that we were very keen to get. He was right up there at the top of the list because he looks very precocious.”
For their part, Yulong were delighted that an operation as prestigious as Coolmore had thought highly enough of the colt to top the bidding.
“He’s a magnificent forward colt,” said Vin Cox, who is just over a month into his stint as Yulong’s General Manager.
“He’s obviously by a very good stallion and he’s been bought by some of the best judges of a colt in the world, so we’re very happy to see him go to a good home. We obviously own the mum and the dad, so he was born and raised on the farm and is very much a Yulong product.
“It’s no secret that Written Tycoon is in the twilight of his stud career, so we have to be very selective about the mares we send to him. In Her Time was a magnificent racehorse who we are confident will produce some outstanding racehorses of her own, and it’s great that an astute judge like Coolmore has recognised that.”
