After finishing a luckless 2nd at her debut run, the aptly named filly Blackberry Bomb made her mark in style at Sale on Thursday, securing a significant payday for her connections at just her second race day outing.
The filly by Brazen Beau put in a charging run from the back of the field under leading rider Blake Shinn, much to the delight of her trainer Simon Zahra.
"It’s awesome, and I have to thank the owners as she wasn’t a cheap filly,” Simon Zahra said. [1]
“I think she is a quality filly. After she got beaten the other day, we were keen to go to the Quezette (Stakes), but Kevin (Payne) rang me and said this was a good option. So, we were happy to come here and leave it to Blake. He summed it up well and got the job done.”
Blackberry Bomb managed to defy a betting drift and outclass a strong field of up-and-coming horses to score the win, but was also rewarded with several bonuses for her connections. Not only did she claim the $20,625 winners stake and the $100,000 Inglis Xtra bonus but she struck gold to secure $30,000 in VOBIS Platinum vouchers, $8,400 in VOBIS Silver bonuses and $14,000 VOBIS Gold 3YO Horse Owners Bonus. A total return of $173,025 for her success which showcases the value on offer for VOBIS nominated runners.
Blackberry Bomb was a notable purchase at the sales, initially pinhooked by James Bester for $210,000 from the Rushton Park draft at the 2022 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. She later commanded $300,000 at the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, bought by trainer Simon Zahra Racing & Cameron Cooke Bloodstock from Segenhoe Stud.
A well-related filly, Blackberry Bomb is a half-sister to multiple black-type winners Shesallshenanigans (Toronado) and Shelby Cobra (Toronado). This win doubles as a nice addition to her family's pedigree page also and suggests she has more to offer on the track. She was bred by Newton Thoroughbreds & Chesapeake Thoroughbreds and is now the third race winner from her dam, Segenhoe Valley (Dane Shadow), who is currently in foal to Toronado.
