Jigsaw’s Journey to Group 1 Glory

There’s something quietly satisfying about a horse like Jigsaw.

Not because of where he’s ended up - a dual Group 1 winner, a $2.9 million earner, 15 wins from 39 starts - but because of where he began. His is a story built over years, not overnight.

Jigsaw is by Manhattan Rain, a proven sire who stood at Victoria’s Blue Gum Farm before his journey west to Geisel Park. He is out of Lonhro mare, Demandz (NZ), who won twice in New Zealand before transferring to the Cranbourne stable of Colin and Cindy Alderson. She was retained by Colin’s wife Lyn for stud duties, with Jigsaw being Demandz’s third foal.

Racing has always been part of the fabric for the Aldersons. Retiring in 2016, Colin was a legendary horseman who also spent thirty years as President of the Victorian Trainers Association. Cindy, who has spent her whole life involved in racing, has a strength of horsemanship, and an uncanny understanding of the equine psyche that benefits the horses in her care. Jigsaw is no exception.

Jigsaw has always shown potential. As a 2YO on debut, he beat that year’s G1 Blue Diamond winner Artorious by 3.25 lengths. The following season, he won four in succession - three at black type level. While his 2024 season saw a string of placings, his most recent preparation has been nothing short of remarkable. He chased and won VOBIS bonuses in the VOBIS Gold Sprint, before quickly turning that into something bigger - a path that G1 winners like Benagil have also taken.

Within weeks, Jigsaw claimed two Group 1 victories - the Sistema Railway S. in New Zealand and the William Reid S. at Caulfield.

For Cindy, the rise still feels slightly surreal.

“It’s getting more and more unbelievable as we go along,” she said.

“He never lost his ability to gallop.” It’s a simple line that speaks volumes about patience in racing.

“Obviously he’s in the form of his life… he has a remarkable will to win.”

In an industry often driven by scale, speed, and turnover, Jigsaw is a reminder of another path where time, trust, and family involvement remain central.
