Phoenix Broodmare Farm’s Damian Gleeson and Deb Gifford are delighted to assemble a hand-picked group of weanlings to present at this week’s Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast.

All foaled on farm and raised at their Euroa property, the draft has been carefully grown out and prepared to their best.

“We have chosen this group of seven weanlings, as they offer a diverse range of bloodlines, including first season stallions that tend to sell well, and proven commercial pedigrees.  They are all bigger and stronger types, which is what the market here demands. This is the best foal sale in Australia, so this is where we need to be,” said Gleeson.

With a mixture of colts and fillies, all VOBIS eligible, Gleeson identifies a couple of their standout lots.

“The Shalaa (IRE) colt out of the Not A Single Doubt mare, Not A Happy Camper who is a stakes-placed mare, is a nice, strong, forward colt by a competitive first season sire. The Shalaa progeny have received good feedback overall, and he is putting great types on the ground,” Gleeson said.

“We are also offering a good type of colt by the speedy son of Not A Single Doubt in Extreme Choice. He is a very nice type out of a stakes-winning, up and running US family. We purchased this mare from the Gold Coast broodmare sale last year, and we are delighted with the weanling she has produced.”

“We are also offering a cracking Shooting To Win colt, and it was great to see him have a good winner in Sydney on the weekend. The feedback on Shooting To Win is still positive, and plenty of trainers have nice horses in their stable; they just need a bit more time. We are very happy with him, and he will be popular with all that inspect him.”

“The Flying Artie colt is another nice weanling we have to offer, while our Dundeel filly is out of the stakes-placed Anabaa mare, Miss Barwang is the flavour of the month. She is an athletic, good walking filly.”

“As a group, they have thrived through the eight-week preparation on farm. We try to get them out into the paddocks during the day to get some sun on their back, and then they come into the stable in the cool of the night. It’s a good balance, and they have handled it very well.”

And once they head back south, Phoenix Broodmare Farm will be straight into the Inglis Great Southern Sale with a baker’s dozen of weanlings to present.

“We have specifically chosen the drafts to suit each sale, and we will have a strong representation of Victorian sires down in Melbourne that we look forward to parading at Oaklands.”

The Gold Coast Magic Millions Weanling Sale commence Wednesday 22 May 2019.
