Perhaps never before has such a globally performed horse called Victoria its stallion home.
Highland Reel, a seven-time Group 1 winning star for Coolmore, has been announced as Swettenham Stud’s new stallion for the upcoming breeding season.
He is the highest earning European trained horse in history, a top-class Group 2 winning two-year-old and was a globetrotting superstar at three, four and five, who incredibly raced at the elite level in seven countries.
“Swettenham Stud is extremely excited to have secured Highland Reel from Coolmore Stud for stallion duties in the southern hemisphere,” Swettenham Stud principal Adam Sangster enthused.
“And while he might be standing at our Nagambie base, Highland Reel’s appeal is truly global.
“With his tremendous race record and what is clearly a stallion’s pedigree, I’m highly confident he will attract broodmare owners from all state, particularly at such a competitive fee.
“Swettenham Stud has always prided itself on assembling an elite stallion roster that enables Victorian breeders access to the best colonial bred pedigrees and international bloodlines, and Highland Reel is another brilliant example of this,” Sangster said.
Highland Reel claimed the spotlight early in his celebrated career as an exceptionally talented two-year-old.
With comments “quickening easily, looking smart, huge amount of ability” beginning to flow from astute racing judges after he demolished his maiden field by 12 lengths, Highland Reel secured the Group 2 Vintage over Goodwood’s fast seven furlongs at his next start.
Highland Reel went on to claim seven Group 1 victories at three, four and five in the US, Hong Kong and the UK in his tenacious front-running style, having also performed gallantly at the elite level in Ireland, France, Australia and Dubai.
“It’s so difficult to keep a horse’s stellar reputation when you travel all over, as you run into different ground conditions, different opposition, different tracks. Highland Reel managed to do that, and that’s his hallmark, that’s his legacy, and that’s the way he will be remembered for years to come,” Racing UK’s, James Willoughby points out.
As a son of Galileo, an eight-time Champion sire of 64 individual Group One winners, Highland Reel is bred on the same potent Galileo/Danehill cross as Frankel and Teofilo, whose Group 1 Australian winners include Happy Clapper, Humidor, Palentino, Sonntag and Kermadec.
From a page littered with black type progeny and multiple successes at the elite level, Highland Reel’s strong female line influence is compelling, being from the Group 1 placed, Australian-bred Danehill mare, Hveger.
A potent producer of Highland Reel’s full-brother, Idaho, a dual Group 1 winner, and half-sister Valdemoro, a twice Group 1 runner-up, Hveger is out of the wonderful ‘blue hen’ Circles of Gold.
Importantly, Highland Reel is also closely related to Champion sprinter and successful stallion Starspangledbanner, who sired the late Champion 2YO Colt in France and former Swettenham stallion The Wow Signal.
Highland Reel brings proven international bloodlines, incredible presence, and remarkable performance, to an already strong and versatile stallion roster that includes Toronado, Americain, Trust In A Gust, Rebel Dane and Puissance De Lune.
Highland Reel will stand at an introductory fee of $15,000 plus GST. For further information, phone Adam Sangster on 0418 543 633 or Sam Matthews on 0487 851 572.
