Exciting filly Sopressa’s brilliant victory in the Group 3 SAJC Auraria Stakes in Adelaide on Saturday was perfect timing for Greta West’s Bucklee Farm, as they presented his half-brother at the Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale the following day.
The Weir trained Sopressa (So You Think) was in a class of her own when accelerating away to win the 1800 metre contest by four and a quarter lengths beating champion filly Miss Finland’s daughter Earth Angel.
Bred by the Victorian Stallion Partnership and Dean Thoroughbreds’ Cathy Webb and Ken Dean, Sopressa now heads the market for the Group 1 Australasian Oaks, with two wins and four placings from nine starts with prize money of $111,610..
On Sunday, Sopressa’s younger sibling, an athletic son of first crop sire Warhorse, was offered as Lot 91 and snapped up by Mornington trainer Kane Harris for $60,000.
Leeanne Smith’s Bucklee Farm has certainly hit a rich vein of form of late with an impressive list of winners this season.
Bucklee Farm winning graduates of recent times have been Group winning Cliff’s Edge, Sunday Escape, Weekend Escape, Leishman, Hay Bale, She’s Our Gift, Lady Selkirk, multiple stakes winner Money Maher and Miss Norway.
“When the winners keep coming, I’m very happy, and although I don’t live for the winners, when we all work so hard, it’s exciting to have this amount of success emerging from our small farm.”
“The VOBIS initiatives are brilliant, and we, as breeders are receiving the rewards. It’s wonderful influence that VOBIS is having on Victorian breeding,” Smith said.
“Although yesterday’s sale was tough going, and we were very busy having the second biggest draft going through the ring with 18 yearlings in total, we are very happy that 16 have found good homes.”
Sopressa was sold for $70,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling to Dowling Park. Smith remembers Sopressa as a weanling fondly being “well grown, and although she was going to take time to furnish, the quality was there.”
The fifth winner from the Group 2 winning Weasel Clause mare, Hidden Strings, Sopressa has a yet-to-be-named two-year-old half-sister by Written Tycoon in training with Brendan McCarthy. Hidden Strings is now foal to the son of Scat Daddy, No Way Never (USA).
