With nine of his progeny catalogued for the upcoming VOBIS Gold Yearling sale, the phenomenal recent success by the progeny of Turffontein could not have come at a better time.

Since the last day of March, the dual group one winner has produced no less than nine individual winners.

The golden run commenced with iron horse Widgee Turf’s barnstorming win in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap over the 1400 metre trip at Caulfield, the same course and distance over which Turffontein took out the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

It was meant to be a run to bring him to peak fitness for the upcoming $280,000 VOBIS Gold Mile at the same track this Saturday.

However someone forgot to tell Widgee Turf that.

After settling at the rear from the outside barrier, the four-year-old looped the field, before coming from a seemingly hopeless position, to mow down his 15 rivals and score a most impressive win in what was his first at stakes level. It took his record to eight wins from sixteen starts, including five of his six starts this campaign, for total prizemoney of just over $600,000.

An outstanding return on the $4,500 he changed hands for as a weanling at the Great Southern Sale.

Bookending the string of wins was Queensland based 2YO filly Eskdale Girl, which despite racing three wide all the way, was much too good for her rivals when scoring a soft win on debut on April 11th at Ipswich. She still has plenty to learn and her connections appear well placed to comfortably recoup the $60,000 she made as a yearling on the Gold Coast.

Right in the middle of that brace of wins was Mike Moroney’s highly promising three-year-old Eagle Ridge, which won first up at Sale on April 4th.

The $65,000 2016 Premier Sale graduate has now won over $80,000 from his two wins and a second from just three starts, with metropolitan success surely beckoning shortly.

Eagle Ridge’s success was the first leg of a winning double at Sale for Turffontein, with tough mare Gauteng Girl later bringing up her seventh career victory.

Among the Blue Gum Farm draft of eighteen at the 2018 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling sale to be held at Oaklands Junction on Sunday April 22nd, are five youngsters by Turffontein.
