A yearling colt by Written Tycoon made history at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last week.
Lot 303, a colt out of Pearl Goddess (Darci Brahma) was sold for $650,000 to the bid of James Harron Bloodstock.
It is believed this is the highest price at Magic Millions ever recorded for a yearling by a sire actively standing in Victoria.
Overall, across Book 1 of the sale, yearlings by the Woodside Park sire averaged $307,500. That is an astonishing 22.4 times his service fee of $13,250 in breeding season 2014.
It is a whopping big commercial achievement considering the highest priced yearling by him previously was ‘just’ $305,000.
“Written Tycoon has had a fantastic week up here averaging $307,500 for eight lots sold. That places him sixth overall at the sale (by sire averages).,” Woodside’s Matt Tillett said.
“What’s more, on Saturday he got a new stakes winner in Grande Rosso, another winner in Hong Kong in Robust Momentum and then another two winners on Sunday across two states.”
The sire’s sale topper, Lot 303, was sold through the Widden draft by the Redwall Syndicate (managed by Qatar Racing’s David Redvers and Hannah Wall), who bought him from the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last year for $140,000.
Of course, James Harron is very familiar with Written Tycoon. He bought and raced Magic Millions Classic and Golden Slipper Capitalist in 2015 and has a number of others by the ire on his books including recent 2yo winner Calligrapher.
Day 1 for the Woodside sire was highlighted by Lot 150 Selling for $440,000 to the bid of trainer Tony McEvoy. Out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Lady Bligh he was sold through the Milburn Creek draft.
McEvoy was very keen to get his hands on the colt even surpassing his anticipated budget to make sure he got the son of Written Tycoon.
“He looked a ready made horse to me. A big powerful fellow. I am very fond of the Written Tycoons having bought a couple of them over the years including a very good colt at Adelaide last year called Despatch (which won the $200,000 Ballarat Clockwise Classic in late 2016).
“I wanted him and I wanted to take him home. He was a lot more than I expected to pay, but he’s a very strong chance of getting to the Magic Millions (2yo Classic) race next year,” McEvoy said on the buyers floor after the big purchase.
“I have bought him on spec but I don’t anticipate I will have a lot of trouble selling the horse. I loved him and if anyone is interested in getting inolved with him then they should get in touch with me.”
Written Tycoon has 6 yearlings catalogued for the upcoming Inglis Classic Sale and another 30 catalogued for the Inglis Premier Sale at Melbourne.
