Victoria, The Thoroughbred State

Last Wednesday, TBV invited guests from Racing Victoria,, race clubs and other stakeholders to come and experience the behind-the-scenes of the Victorian breeding industry.

Hosted by Adam Sangster and his team at Swettenham Stud, guests were given a tour of what occurs on a farm during the breeding season.

Starting the day with a trip to the breeding barn, Adam and Jason Robinson walked guests through what occurs when a mare arrives on farm and the processes his team follow in the covering shed.

From here, guests headed to the stallion barn to gain an understanding of the important role that sales companies play in the journey of a horse from the time they are born until they go through the sales ring.

Simon Vivian from Inglis and Tim Brown from Magic Millions were on hand to explain conformation and what they look for when it comes to yearlings at the sales.

James O’Brien and Adam Sangster informed guests about key facts and figures such as the $193.3 million dollars in economic benefit which the Victorian breeding industry contributes to the economy and the 5863 participants across various regions of Victoria.

It is staggering to think that given such a high level of investment, the $193.3 million dollars in economic benefit does not include Victorian breeder’s investment in racehorses.

James and Adam highlighted the combination of the perfect environment to raise horses in, the strong support of the Victorian breeding industry from the State Government and Racing Victoria, the lucrative prizemoney and the world’s best incentive scheme, VOBIS, were all strong driving factors and that there was no better time than now, to invest in Victoria.
