Godolphin’s wonderful season with their juveniles rolled on to Caulfield on Saturday where the Freedman-trained name returned to the honour roll when Lyre stormed home to win the $1,500,000 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200 metres.

The daughter of Lonhro had just one of the 14 runners behind her on the turn. Ridden patiently under Luke Currie, Lyre stormed home to defeat Lankan Star by half a length with the South Australian Free Of Debt (Unencumbered) giving a Victorian breeder supporter base a great sight, a further long-neck back in third.

“She’s obviously a quality filly, and arguably she should be unbeaten,” Anthony Freedman said. “She’s kept improving with each run, and she was the strongest at the finish.”

Lyre was born, raised and foaled at Godolphin’s Northwood nursey in Nagambie, in Victoria’s famous North-East breeding region.

“She’s a homebred, and they have a great system. She came to us in beautiful condition and beautifully educated. It was a case of developing her and keep improving her into the race.”

Sheikh Mohammed has raced horses with the Freedman family for approximately 15 to 20 years, with Lyre becoming their first Group 1 winner, while other notable horses Freedman raced under the Godolphin or Darley banner, were Group winners Romneya, Willander, Viennese and Colour.

“We had a great association with Godolphin in the past, and we’ve remained very good friends. Our association with Godolphin has gone back a long time now, they’ve been very good to our family personally in the last 12 months. When Vin Cox came along, he pushed for me to get some yearlings and it has worked out great,” Freedman said.

Lyre advances her overall record to 3 wins from 4 starts with earnings of $1,081,400

From one of Darley Stud’s most successful families, Lyre is a three-quarter sister to dual Group 1 winner Victorian based stallion Impending (Lonhro). She is the second foal and first winner out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Erato who was sold by Godolphin at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in foal to Helmet for $120,000 to Australian Bloodstock.

A sister to the multiple stakes-placed Memorial, Erato is a half-sister to Impending (Lonhro) and the Group 3 winner Forget (Exceed And Excel) out of the Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas and Group 1 STC Queen of the Turf Stakes winner Mnemosyne (Encosta de Lago).
