2018 Victoria Derby winner Extra Brut has died following a walking machine accident on Tuesday. Extra Brut was Victorian-bred by Congupna breeder Andrew McDonald and at the recent TBV Awards won 2018/19 Champion Victorian Bred Stayer and 2018/19 Champion Victorian Bred 3YO, as well as earning Andrew the title of 2018/19 Victorian Small Breeder of the year.

It is understood the Hong Kong Derby contender, who had run just once at his new home last month after being sold to Hong Kong earlier this year, was warming up on the walker before a planned trial.

The South China Morning Post quoted new trainer Frankie Lor as saying: “It is very sad, very unusual accident.”

Expectations were high for Extra Brut in his new home after he finished an eye-catching third at his Hong Kong debut in the Chevalier Cup at Sha Tin last month.

Extra Brut won the Victoria Derby and placed third in the Mackinnon Stakes in the spring of 2018 but the horse lost his form with two unplaced runs in the autumn for new trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

It is not the first walker machine accident to claim a life in Hong Kong, with Michael Freedman losing a horse and having several injured after a major incident in 2017.
