Rushton Park’s Kayley and David Johnston are heading north and ready to don the shorts and t-shirts with a quality group of weanlings on offer at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale next week.
Combining their client’s horses with their own homebred’s, the Johnston’s have assembled a group that will spark appeal with all level of the buying bench.
“We are looking forward to heading up to presenting our draft from Rushton Park in the sunshine. There is always a great buzz on the complex and the buyers are there, ready to spend.”
“We are offering this group of foals due to the trading market for weaning’s currently being so strong. Having foals by some of the hottest stallions in the country, in Zoustar and Dundeel, meant the time was right to sell and hopefully, they get the money they deserve.”
“Every horse in our draft is a nice horse, well grown, and they will all have their place in the market. Additionally, they are all VOBIS eligible, bar one, which is another good selling point for Victorian-based trainers and owners, especially off the back of the successful and lucrative Showdown race day.”
Looking at a few of the individual weanlings on offer, David is pleased to be presenting some the nicest foals he and Kayley have bred this year.
“Lot 649, the Divine Prophet colt out of Absolute Pleasure is one of our best foals, just outstanding, and I know his family very well – being from Perth. The dam ran second in the Gimcrack and third in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate and she has put these qualities into her colt, being a sharp, early type. He will certainly be popular.”
“Lot 24, the Dundeel is a lovely filly, out of the Dehere mare, Bounding Along, which is on the same cross as Castelvecchio. It is a great current page, as the mares first foal is a winner in South Africa, and the two-year-old has recently won a trial very well. We have had an offer on the mare recently, which is a positive sign that others have the same high opinion of her.”
Rushton Park’s draft will also offer a strong selection of first season stallions including Shalaa (IRE), Star Turn, Winning Rupert and Sooboog.
But special mention must be given to Lot 77, the Zoustar filly out of the Show A Heart mare, Concha Bella, who is a half-sister to Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Woorim. With both of her foals to race been winners, she is proving herself as a consistent producer.
“This is our good mate, Barry Faulds’ weanling, that he bred as a foal share with Woodside Park Stud. With the extra responsibility both he and Alysha have taken on, having lost his little sister suddenly and taking over the care of her three children, it is a massive stress on them financially and emotionally, and we are happy to help out, so we are preparing the weanling at no cost.”
“She is a tall, well-grown foal, and a great walker and I think she should sell quite nicely. Fingers crossed it gives them all a bit of a lift and puts some much-appreciated money in the bank.”
“Lot 178, the Star Turn weanling is a solid, strong filly from the Blackfriars mare Garden Of Eden. A proven producer with all three to race being winners including Matt Cumani’s Akkadian who was placed in the Group 2 Sires Produce.”
“All of our weanlings will offer buyers a product that they will be able to see great improvement in. With the pin-hooking market so competitive, many buyers want to be able to put the polish on them themselves to create profitable yearlings.”
