Rosemont’s Northern Mission

Rosemont Stud's weanling Lot 237, Starcraft x Jackpot Queen.

Rosemont Stud is offering an exceptional draft of Victorian bred and raised weanlings at this week’s Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast.

Gerard Jones, Rosemont’s Operations Manager, is pleased with the selection of horses, who are a mixture of client and farm-owned weanlings, as he identifies a number of the standout lots in the draft.

“The horses we have bought up to the Coast are the forward examples of the stallions we have supported. They are all types that will suit the Gold Coast weanling market,” said Gerard.

“With sires representing both Victorian and interstate farms, as well as showcasing progeny of our resident stallions and the quality produce of our established broodmares, we will be offering foals by proven sires in Starcraft and Choisir, exciting stallion Brazen Beau and foals by first season sire Star Turn.”

“Focusing our foals into one targeted draft has enabled us to bring the crème of the crop, from some of the most fashionable and proven stallions in the market.”

“Our two Brazen Beau weanling colts are both very forward and early types. Lot 228, out of the Shamardal mare, Inflection will be popular with anyone that sees him. He is very forward, with great muscle definition and bone, and a can-do attitude.”

“Lot 272 is out of the Authorised mare, Legal Mistress, a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Griante, and her dam is a half to the Group 1 winner Grand Journey. There is plenty of currency in the pedigree and for people doing their research, there are also two or three Brazen Beau’s out of the family that have sold recently in the yearling market for big cash.”

“We also bought up two Starcraft (NZ) weanlings, Lot 286 out of Annaba mare, Lykanna and Lot 237 out of Not A Single Doubt mare, Jackpot Queen. Starcraft is continuing to do a phenomenal job, especially in Hong Kong. Both are out of Rosemont owned mares, that are proven producers at the sales and on the track.”

“They are well-grown colts, and loose, fluid movers. They showcase the stallion impressively, and as we always continually get asked if we have a Starcraft colt for sale, we have bought two great examples.”

“The Annaba x Starcraft cross, as seen in Lot 286, is well-proven and has worked with success in the past. These are the mares we look for to go to Starcraft, and out of eight runners, there have been five winners and two stakes winners, most notably the Blue Diamond Prelude winner, Property.

“Our Exceed and Excel colt is the best on pedigree out of the mare Silent Entrance (GB). He is a good type, a decent size and boasts the rich Juddmonte family, being out of a Beat Hollow mare with the admired Dansili and Champs Elysees is on his page.”

“Overall, the weanling draft all have good attitudes and have handled the prep extremely well. They have shown growth physically and mentally and are sound weanlings with clean x-rays. A big thank you must be given to the hardworking and dedicated team of staff we have on the farm,” Gerard said.

With a busy breeding season just around the corner with four resident stallions, Rosemont Stud are thrilled to welcome Starspangledbanner home. Excitingly, his Northern Hemisphere two-year-old crop has had five winners from six runners, and all look to be headed to Ascot.

Starspangledbanner is joined by the relocated Shamus Award, a progressive stallion that is ticking along nicely with at least two to three winners a week including his most recent stakes victor, Etana who claimed the Group 2 Magic Millions The Roses. Her win will no doubt boost her Group 1 Queensland Oaks prospects, and with his oldest runners only three-year-old’s, there is plenty of upside ahead.

While Starcraft is continuing to secure quality mares with exceptional fertility at 86%.

“He loves his job and is a good old marvel. He is still kicking goals with 100 mares last year and 120 the year before; he has good numbers coming through out of quality mares,” Jones said.

Rounding out the quartet, Nostradamus is getting positive feedback from trainers and breakers, “and they are optimistic about having them in their stables, with Philip Stokes, who has two in training, having a very high opinion of them both,” Gerard continued.

Looking to next week, Rosemont will present a large draft of race fillies and in-foal mares for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

“They will offer the buying bench a great selection of pedigrees, with some in foal to popular stallions such as Rubick and the big gun I Am Invincible, as well as mares in foal to resident farm stallion Starcraft.”

The Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale commence Wednesday 22 May 2019.
