With a float load of six quality mares heading to Queensland’s Gold Coast in the coming days, it is a case of quality over quantity for Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, as they are one of ten vendors representing Victoria and aiming for sale success at next week’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
Watched over by Lauriston’s James O’Brien, the first to go through the sale ring will be Lot 1055, a well named mare by the name of Candy Stripes (Commands). A stakes winner trained by Victoria’s Tony Noonan, she is currently in foal to Group 2 winning sprinter and Victorian sire, Rich Enuff.
By Not A Single Doubt, Escobar will go next under the hammer for Lauriston as Lot 1172. A winner at 1050 metres, she is the dam of 3 foals, one named. She is currently in foal to Caravaggio, an exceptional son of world-class sire Scat Daddy, and an unbeaten Group 1 winner at two.
Ocean Storm (Lot 1432) is an unraced mare by 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense (USA). She is a half-sister to Group 1 BTC Cup winner, Your Song and is currently in foal to the stallion Zoustar.
Lot 1502, Remlaps Jewel (Choisir), is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Manawanui and is currently in foal to Written Tycoon. She won three races in New South Wales over 1000 – 1110 metres and is the dam of three foals.
Lot 1549, Showstopper is by the consistent Irish sire Tobougg (IRE). The dam of three winners from five named foals, including the Maher / Eustace trained Kardashing, she will go through the ring in foal to arguably this year’s most popular stallion, Brazen Beau.
The final lot of the Lauriston draft is the Written Tycoon daughter, Sports Writer (Lot 1575). A winner of two sprint races, she is a half-sister to the Robbie Griffiths trained and three-time Listed winner, It Is Written. Sports Writer will go through the sale ring in foal to Lonhro.
“Our draft is a nice one. All the mares are lovely and will present very well as a whole,” James said.
“As Victorian breeders, we are proud to have half our mares in foal to Victorian stallions. Written Tycoon is flying and Brazen Beau is doing extremely well. The Magic Millions National Sales Series is the biggest sale in Australia and we are looking forward to being part of it. We’re here having a go and having fun.”
And whilst ensuring the best results for his 2019 draft is serious business, James will also be keeping a keen eye out for a previous graduate of his also going through the ring, two-time Group 1 winner Global Glamour (Lot 1219). The Star Witness mare was bred by James at Lauriston and sold through their 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft.
“She was a terrific race mare,” said James. “Having bred her at the farm, I’ve followed her career and I’m excited to see her go through the sale ring.”
