A Group 2 win on Saturday in Macau has put Victorian bred The Alfonso within striking distance of the magical AU$1 million mark in career earnings.
The six year old son of Magnus was bred in Victoria by former trainer Peter Moody and has now won four stakes races including the Group 1 Macau Derby in 2015.
On Saturday, the Joe Lau trained The Alfonso won the Group 2 Winter Trophy for the second consecutive year. The victory likely elevates him to the highest rated horse in Macau.
A trip back to Hong Kong beckons for the Magnus gelding after he was only narrowly beaten in a Group 3 race there earlier this year.
In Australia, The Alfonso was trained by Chris Waller to four city wins and earnings of $193,000 before being exported. Across the three jurisdictions he has raced in, the gelding has now earned more than AU$850,000.
His successes continue yet another strong season for Sun Stud sire Magnus. Other stakes winners this season have included dual Group 1 star Malaguerra and Western Australian Malibu Style. The sire’s total progeny earnings in Australia are approaching $2.5 million.
Four yearlings by Magnus are set to go through the ring on the Gold Coast at the Magic Millions Sale this week. This includes a pair bred by Rob Crabtree’s Dorrington Park operation.
Offered through the Segenhoe draft, both yearlings are out of black type winning mares.
