Darley’s soon-to-be Victorian-based sire, Impending further enhanced his CV, when he secured his second Group 1 victory with a strong win in the Kingsford-Smith Cup at Doomben on Saturday.
The James Cummings-trained, Godolphin- owned entire is already the winner of the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at the same track a year ago – and he is now the favourite this year’s edition on the 9th of June.
“This was a perfect target race for him after winning the (Group 2) Victory Stakes here first up and then finishing second in the Doomben 10,000,” Cummings said.
“Today suited him because it was weight-for-age but we will definitely look at the Stradbroke. He is going to stud in the spring and it would be the ideal way for him to go out.”
The good news for broodmare owners is that regardless of the result in the Stradbroke – or the Kingsford-Smith for that matter – Impending’s fee had already been set at $22,000 for the rapidly approaching breeding season.
“We had the option, of course, to stand Impending in the Hunter Valley but we’ve got a massive investment in Victoria and reckon he’ll be a perfect fit for Darley Northwood,” Godolphin Australia managing director Vin Cox said.
“The strength and depth of the Victorian market is huge and, hardly surprising, there has already been a lot of interest in Impending from the state’s broodmare owners.”
Impending is one of Lonhro’s 75 Stakes winners and, along with his Godolphin stablemate Kementari, he is the sire’s second Group 1 winner in Australia this season.
Impending has the maternal pedigree to match his performance. He is out of dual Group 1 winning Mnemosyne, a mare by champion broodmare sire in Encosta de Lago.
Mnemosyne is the dam of five winners from six foals to race including Group 3 winner Forget (Exceed And Excel) while Impending’s 3YO sister Epidemic looks talented having won her past two starts in Sydney recently.
The family also includes the Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Full On Aces. stakes-placed gelding Tantat Secret and his Stakes-winning brother Top Of The Pack.
Impending will stand at Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria this year for an introductory fee of $22,000 (inc GST).
