Merton Creek Thoroughbreds are taking a draft of six to Melbourne Premier, and Sunny Mitchell comments ‘it is based on quality not quantity.’ The draft includes yearlings by first season sires for the Southern Hemisphere Highland Reel and ImpendingImpending has already produced impressive results in the sales ring with his first yearlings through the ring averaging $127,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale and Merton Creek will be offering three yearlings by Impending in their draft. Similarly, this year is the first southern hemisphere yearlings through the ring for Highland Reel and his first yearlings averaged $115,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale.  

The first lot through the ring for Merton Creek Thoroughbreds is Lot 113, the son of Impending out of the Nicconi mare, Kristofferson who was a winner over 1000m. The dam is half-sister to Listed winners Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Good ‘N’ Fast who has one foal to race that was placed as a two-year-old.  ‘This colt is a great type with good symmetry and excellent proportions.  He is very athletic and fluent across the ground. His work is flawless as are his X-rays.’  

Lot 576 is a highlight yearling in Merton Creek’s draft, a filly by Highland Reel out of the Zamindar mare, Dazzledar. The filly is a three-quarter sister to the Stakes winner Kinaan, a gelding by Galileo and her second dam Razzle, is a full sister to Danehill. An outstanding pedigree with multiple Black type listed on her page. ‘We regard her as the standout in our draft.  She was our pick of the 2019 foal crop and she has maintained that position through her development and preparation. She has excellent conformation, well grown with good bone, great work ethic with an attitude to match and has flawless X-rays.’  

Another son of Impending in the draft is Lot 585, out of the mare Doojah. The Stakes placed dam was a sprinting type winning over 1100m and 1200m gaining $156,300 in prizemoney. Doojah has produced three winners with five foals making it the track. ‘This colt has grown well through all phases of his development.  He has been impressive throughout his preparation stepping up to all that was asked from him.  His preparation has seen him mature in growth, muscle and importantly mind set. He has impressive X-rays.’  

The next through the ring is Lot 643, a colt by Bel Esprit out of the Red Ransom mare, Lambrays. The dam is full sister to Cinque who also produced the Group 3 winner Alassio. Lambrays has two foals to race who are both winners, Burgundy Lass a filly by Nicconi a four-time winner and Swilling a filly by Delago Deluxe a three-time winner.  ‘This colt was always a standout as a foal and has continued to impress through his development and preparation. He has excellent conformation, well grown with good bone, great work ethic with an attitude to match and has excellent X-rays.’ 

The final Impending yearling of the draft is Lot 753 a filly out of the Commands mare, Amaal. The dam is a winner over 1400m and is half-sister to Stakes winner Night at the Opera. This filly has an impressive pedigree with plenty of black type on her page. ‘This filly is another impressive type.  She is extremely athletic with fluent action, has a great walk, a beautiful temperament with an excellent work ethic.  She is very quick on the uptake and has been a pleasure to prepare.’ 

Lot 799 is the final yearling through the ring for Merton Creek Thoroughbreds. A son of Smart Missile by the Bletchley Park mare, Decryption. The dam has two foals to race with two winners, Royal Enigma and Is Anyone There. ‘This impressive colt has grown very evenly through his development with good consistent weight gain.  He is well grown in both body and height, has excellent bone and is attentive in his work. This colt is presented with flawless X-rays. He is 4th last in the sale but definitely worth the wait.’
