Modewarre based breeder Glentree Downs had two lots at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale this week. They both sold well…in fact they averaged $1.15 million!
“Our results certainly exceeded our expectations. We are absolutely delighted.” Stud manager Luke Simpson unsurprisingly exclaimed
The first, lot 23 the Frankel (GB) x Aqua Bella (GB) colt sold to Hong Kong buyer Domeland for $1.1 million.
The second, a Snitzel x Asscher (NZ) colt went to the final $1.2 million bid of Gai Waterhouse/Blue Sky Bloodstock and agent Kerry Radcliffe. Radcliffe was reported to be buying on behalf of American owner George Bolton.
Glentree Downs is owned by Bruce Wilson whose family established and still run Reece, Australia’s biggest bathroom and plumbing supplies chain.
Simpson said the result from the Frankel colt was especially pleasing considering the time and effort put into the dam’s selection, mating to the United Kingdom based superstar-sire and importation.
“She (dam Aqua Bella) was a mare we purchased in Europe with a view to breeding to Frankel in southern hemisphere time,” he said.
“We brought her back to Victoria where she was foaled down at our Glentree farm and we got a beautiful colt…and has now been raised out to be a 1.1 million dollar yearling.”
Glentree’s Snitzel colt was certainly one of the much talked about yearlings in the lead up to the start of the sale and his price met those buyer expectations.
“We’re delighted Gai and Blue Sky purchased him. We’ve got high hopes for him,” Simpson said.
“He was a brilliant first foal from a Stravinsky mare (Asscher) – the same cross as Russian Revolution – from the Eight Carat family which is so prolific.”
“We’re just a small boutique operation which breeds eighteen to twenty mares,” he said.
“Bruce (Wilson) is a fantastic bloke, he is very passionate about the industry.
“He’s a passionate Victorian breeder. We foal them down, breed them, rear them from our farm.
“To get results like these here at Easter is fantastic and it’s the essence of Bruce and his family to produce results like this and all going well for them to go on and be top class horses.”
Sidenote: Interestingly, the Lot 297 Brazen Beau x Pretty Penny filly sold for $400,000 at the sale has a strong Glentree background. The dam was sold by Glentree for $570,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in foal to the Darley Victoria sire. She is also the dam of Group winners Sertorius and Dollar For Dollar.
