For Chris Charles of Franklin Farm, her life has always centred around horses in one way or another.

These days, after many years of different roles throughout her life, she is a hobby breeder who breeds a few horses at her 40-acre farm in Euroa.

This year, she will present a draft of three yearlings for the Melbourne Premier sale.

“I am quite happy with the draft. If buyers are looking for good boned racehorses, they will find them here,” Chris said.

“All three have had pedigree updates and we try to breed horses that will become racehorses,” she said.

“I like to buy mares from families which I know from past associations,” Chris said.

The first lot to go through the ring, will be lot 640, a gelding by Starcraft out of Lady Jouster.

“This yearling is a lovely huge walking horse, and you need almost half the Tullamarine runway to turn him around,” Chris laughs.

“He was gelded because he was a big heavy horse and it’s done the trick. Now he’s just a nice big horse and he will just need a bit of time now,” she said.

The next yearling to head through the ring for Christine, is lot 746, a filly by Sepoy out of Which Vault.

“This is a beautiful Sepoy filly who carries a double cross of Jesmond Lass, the mother of Canny Lass, Canny Lad. For the pedigree lovers, she has good residual value and is out of the Lemon Spice family, which is well known in Victoria and is a great filly family,” Christine said.

The final lot which will head through for Chris, is lot 771, a colt by Danerich, out of the Good Journey mare, Bon Vacance

The dam of the colt has had two foals to race for two winners and the colt includes seven-time winner Truly Great and Special Alert in his family.

Since the catalogue went to print, Truly Great won the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes beating Trap For Fools and was a very close second in the Perth Cup.

“He is a nice big walking coltand it is always helpful having a pedigree update before the sales. I am very happy with him and I think buyers will be pleased with him,” Chris said.
